What Is Phase 1 Interceptive Orthodontics?

Phase 1 interceptive orthodontic treatment is for kids aged 7 to 9 who will benefit from early, targeted dental treatment. During treatment, an orthodontist can:

  • Direct jaw development.
  • Make room for incoming permanent teeth.
  • Correct bite issues.

Addressing major issues early on often means your child needs less time in braces or aligners later. Look for signs that your child might benefit from early care, and intercept issues early.

Know the Warning Signs

Signs Your Child May Need Early Treatment

Every child’s smile develops differently, and some issues are much easier to correct while the jaw is still growing. Look for these common signs:

Narrow jaw, crossbite or underbite

If your child’s upper and lower teeth don’t line up, or their upper jaw appears narrow, it may signal a jaw growth discrepancy.

Teeth wearing down

A traumatic bite, where upper and lower teeth make damaging contact, can wear away permanent enamel before it has a chance to last a lifetime.

Crowding or blocked teeth

If teeth look bunched together, or a permanent tooth seems to be coming in behind a baby tooth, early intervention can help create the space needed.

Teeth growing in the wrong direction

This occurs when a tooth erupts at an angle or in the wrong position, something Dr. Paul can spot quickly during an evaluation.

A thumb sucking habit

Active digit habits past a certain age can gradually push teeth out of alignment and affect how the jaw develops over time.

Recommended by the AAO: The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. A thorough assessment helps Dr. Paul identify whether early treatment could make a meaningful difference.

The Phase 1 Journey

Early Treatment, Less to Worry About Later

After your child’s orthodontic evaluation, treatment can start right away, whether your child needs palate expanders or limited braces in Portland. Phase 1 treatment usually ends around age 9, marking the start of a natural resting phase during which we monitor your child as their remaining permanent teeth come in. Usually, around ages 12 to 14, Phase 2 begins, completing the full orthodontic journey.

Ages 7-9 Phase 1 Active Treatment Guided jaw development
6-12 mo. Typical Treatment Length Varies by child’s needs

What to Expect

Phase 1 Treatment Options

No two treatment plans look the same. Dr. Paul works with each child individually to determine the right approach. Here’s what Phase 1 treatment may include:

Palate Expanders

Dr. Paul’s most-used Phase 1 appliance. Expanders guide jaw development, correct crossbites, and create room for crowded teeth, gently and gradually over time.

Limited Braces

Targeted braces on just the problem teeth, not a full set, can address alignment issues before they become more complex and costly to treat later.

Clear Aligners

A discreet option for early alignment correction. Removable and comfortable, clear aligners can be a great fit for motivated young patients.

Habit Appliances

Custom appliances gently discourage thumb sucking and other digit habits that, if left unchecked, gradually shift teeth and jaw development.

Dr. Paul has helped many young patients just like yours. With proactive treatment, he sets the stage for a smile that grows with them.
